It Gets Louder Here

I know that it hasn’t been that long since my last mix but the holidays are coming and spending time making mixes ceases to be a priority (not that making mixes is ever really a priority. Hell, it hardly qualifies as a hobby). I started things off with the German band ‘Gift’, one of those “no compromise” heavy progressive bands from the 70’s and, surprisingly, they fit right in with the rest of the bands featured in this mix. ‘Got To Find A Way’ segues nicely into guitarists Hank Shermann and vocalist King Diamond’s pre-Merciful Fate band ‘Brats’, whose punk/hard rock style bridges the late 70’s into the early 80’s (where most of the bands in this mix reside). Folded into this batch of bands is Japan’s ‘Nokemono’ (野獣, Japanese for “Beast”), a rare extra track from the first ‘Iron Maiden’ album, and the KISS like stylings of ‘Squadron’ (at least, they sound like a band that probably worshiped KISS, a band I happen to detest, but oddly enough I find a few ‘Squadron’ songs tolerable). Hope you like what I’ve done here.

Agree with it or not, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the Occupy movement has seized the narrative in the United States (and abroad), making issues of wealth inequality, systemic corruption, and class, topics once verboten in political discourse fed to use on a daily basis, central topics of discussion concerning the current “crises.” This mix is a shout out to the people taking to the streets.

Personally, i always liked my metal flavored with the political and found bands who focused on “evil” topics like Satan, shitting in churches, and the like to be rather sophomoric (fun but hardly something to be taken seriously). You might notice that not all of these bands can technically be called “metal.” I did blur the genres here with bands who did the same. Some crossover, some hardcore, some hard rock but all of them of a similar spirit.

Don’t worry, this is not the beginning of a trend, i’ll get back to mixes focusing on praising metal. Until armageddon.
